0:07
stigma is a set of negative and
0:11
frequently unfair beliefs that a society
0:15
or group of people have about something
0:18
specifically mental health stigma refers
0:20
to the stigma attached to mental health
0:23
conditions inclusive of substance use
0:24
disorders and the Discrimination that
0:26
can happen to people who are living with
0:28
them for mental health specifically stigma
0:31
tends to be negative stereotypes such as
0:33
people with mental health are violent it
0:36
can really make problems worse as it may
0:40
stop a person from appropriately
0:42
recognizing their illness or being
0:44
insightful about those things and this
0:46
can certainly impact one's ability to
0:48
function most of us do speak Spanish we
0:52
do have strong family beliefs and strong
0:54
Community beliefs those times of things
0:56
are very positive can also be very
0:58
negative when it comes to seeking mental
1:00
health treatment there is a long history
1:02
of mistreatment of African-Americans in
1:04
healthcare which has led to poor
1:05
outcomes and less access to care and I
1:09
think in those communities mental health
1:11
issues are often compounded by the
1:13
psychological stress of systemic racism
1:17
and mistrust we have been saying look at
1:19
Lo que pasa en casa se queda en casa which means what
1:21
happens at home stays at home and we are very
1:24
private especially when it comes to
1:26
personal and sometimes family issues
1:29
Early studies of mental illness were
1:31
really designed to indicate that
1:33
African-Americans had higher rates of
1:35
mental illness than
1:37
non-african-americans this has certainly
1:39
later been refuted in a multitude of
1:41
studies but the damage was really done
1:43
because of stigma African-Americans have
1:45
been given the diagnosis of
1:47
schizophrenia more so than other
1:49
affective disorders like bipolar
1:51
disorder despite presenting with the
1:53
same symptoms some of the studies show
1:55
only one in three black or
1:57
African-Americans with mental health
1:59
issues receive appropriate treatment
2:02
either because of not seeking that
2:03
treatment out or not being properly
2:06
engaged in the healthcare Continuum or
2:09
being adherent to the recommendation so
2:11
I think there there's large impacts and
2:13
there's multiple issues that kind of
2:16
cause that Humana is joining the fight to
2:18
reduce stigma in many ways ensuring that
2:21
the providers that we contract with of
2:24
ss that they bring on board do receive education
2:26
in cultural humility help with interpretation for
2:30
services and they also doing a lot of
2:32
research on population health strategies
2:34
and been looking at how to give back to
2:37
communities we're taking a multi-prong
2:39
approach because we understand that
2:42
stigma is multifactorial so we're
2:44
addressing those things head on Humana’s
2:47
Focus really on integrating Behavioral
2:49
Health with physical health is probably
2:52
the most impactful way of impacting and
2:55
fighting stigma the integration of
2:57
Behavioral Health and physical health
2:59
shows the equal importance of the
3:01
two as well as the understanding of the
3:04
impact that one has towards the other so
3:06
it's really important that as a provider
3:09
Community you know we all stick together
3:11
right no one person has the solution I
3:15
think for physician’s as well l it is really important that when
3:18
We’re with those patients in our
3:19
visits that we slow down a little bit
3:22
and really engage those individuals I would
3:25
encourage other Physicians who want to
3:27
fight against stigma just to Simply
3:29
conscious of their language to continue
3:32
to show compassion for those with mental
3:34
illness and to use their voices to
3:37
advocate for changes in systems in order
3:41
to provide more access to Quality Health
3:43
Care for people with mental
3:48
illness

Trainings
The LDH OBH makes available standardized basic training modules for unlicensed providers and direct care staff as an introduction to the key concepts they must be familiar with and competencies they must demonstrate prior to rendering specialized behavioral health services to Medicaid recipients in Louisiana. After completing each training, an attestation must be submitted to us.
OBH provides approved statewide trainings for peer support specialists and makes every effort to ensure a minimum of 10 trainings are offered each year. Trainings may be conducted virtually or in person at various locations around the state. Capacity for the trainings is limited; therefore, the application process is competitive. Upon successful completion of training, peer support specialists will be deemed recognized by the state of Louisiana.
IDD Training for Behavioral Health
Providing behavioral health services for individuals with Intellectual Developmental Disabilities and behavioral health diagnosis can be challenging. To increase access to quality behavioral health service providers in Louisiana for these individuals, Humana Healthy Horizon in Louisiana has partnered with the Louisiana’s Office of Citizens with Developmental Disabilities to provide a training opportunity for both unlicensed and licensed behavioral health professionals.
Providers can access this free training on-demand with the Trusted Provider Network (TPN) Health. Licensed behavioral health professionals can earn 5.5hrs of Clinical continue education credits.
